Hypnotized–But, She Doesn’t Know It
During a classroom demonstration at Bayonne High School, I hypnotized three students, then—while they were still in the state of hypnosis—I asked them whether they thought they were hypnotized. I like to do this during my demonstrations to give the class and the volunteers the opportunity to realize that, although a person is deeply hypnotized, he/she can feel as though they are awake or not hypnotized. Its interesting to see how people rationalize their behavior while hypnotized. Some people dont even realize they are hypnotized. For those studying hypnosis: Why do you suppose this happens? She turned out to be a great subject and she really liked hypnosis, so I did some demonstrations. Sandi and Jim took me to a pub in Tempe, Arizona for some street hypnosis. Before we went in, I decided to hypnotize Sandi. When she realizes I am going to do an instant induction on her, she says “Oh no!” Sandi is an extreme somnambulist and knew that she would drop. I had forgotten that she is such a good subject, but because I was in good position and balance I was able to catch her.
